SELF TALK: Renewing Your Mind in a Broken World

CH 3 – It’s a Crazy World

Understand and take courage
We all expect living in this world to be life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, this is incorrect. It is a wild ride. This world is crazy, full of cracks, flaws, unsound, and way off. The Bible refers to the crazy world as the “World System.”

The World System is judged by God and it has a ruler, the Devil.

  • John 12:31 – You will have tribulation in this World System.

  • John 16:33 – Satan has help in causing tribulation. These are fallen angels that were cast out of heaven with him when he rebelled. (Revelation 12:7–9)

  • The Devil is a liar, murderer, and the father of lies (he lies to you and deceives you). (John 8:44)

  • He is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (that means you). (1 Peter 5:8)

  • He deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden and death entered our world. (Genesis 3:1)

When we believe his lies, we sin like she did. All humans have sinned. We now experience spiritual death and physical death due to our sin.

  • Romans 3:23

  • Romans 5:12

  • Isaiah 53:6 – We do our own thing and turn our own way.

CH 4 – There is Good News

Jesus has overcome the world (the World System)
Jesus is fully God and fully man (born of the virgin Mary and of the Holy Spirit). (Philippians 2:6–9)
He was without sin (He was not deceived nor did He believe the lies). God the Father gave His Son Jesus to all humankind out of love. (John 3:16)

His death on the cross paid the price for our sins:

  • Hebrews 9:22 – There is a heavenly law that states that there can be no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of pure sinless blood.

  • Romans 5:6–8 – Because Jesus died for us, we can have a personal relationship with God.

The helpless accept the help
To get this forgiveness, we must ask God to forgive us for what we have done and believe in Jesus (accept Him into our hearts). (Romans 6:23)
Take the mercy and accept the help. (Hebrews 4:15–16)

We have to go through Jesus to get this help:

  • John 14:6 – He was made sin on our behalf.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – We are forgiven and redeemed through His blood.

  • Ephesians 1:7

  • 1 Peter 1:18–19

If we have accepted Him, we are saved from the wrath to come. We are no longer enemies to God but now friends of God.

Living in this crazy World System ruled by the Devil, you will be abused, neglected, abandoned, rejected, robbed of your innocence, deceived, confused, and more. We are living in a combat zone—we are behind enemy lines.

Do you want to stay in this state? Or do you want God’s free gift of eternal life through Jesus?

You say you already believe in God? You do well. However, the demons also believe—and shudder. (James 2:19)
Just believing that there is a God is not enough. Demons are not saved.

To be saved from eternal damnation, you must confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead.

  • Romans 10:9–10

CH 5 – You Are a Masterpiece

Created in Christ Jesus for good works in the world
If you have accepted Jesus, you are God’s workmanship. (Ephesians 2:10)
You are to do good works. You are uniquely you for a very good purpose. This should be a part of your self-talk.

You need to learn to see yourself and the world around you through the eyes of God via His Word – truth.

The truth will reveal and dispel the lies you have been believing.
Your mind has a mix of messages that must constantly be measured against the truth of God’s Word to ensure that you do not believe lies.
Beware: you can still be deceived, but you are no longer devoid of the truth. This means you can now recognize, think, and walk in truth.

You must retrain your mind to think and talk to yourself based on what God says in His Word.
Your thoughts cannot be based on what you have always thought, felt, or said to yourself in the past.

Here is a truth about you:
Before God spoke the world into existence, He thought of you, planned for you, prepared good works for you, and preserved His Word, which shows you how to accomplish the good work.

You are God’s masterpiece.
Knowing God’s truth about you gives you the confidence to be mentally and emotionally prepared for every situation.

  • You are beloved of God (Romans 9:25)
Knowing this truth gives you courage.

Retrain your mind
Have you been telling yourself the truth?
Self-talk that does not line up with God’s Word is a lie.

Psalm 139:1–18 lists all the ways God knows you and things He knows about you. This is truth.

We have a default thinking mode ruled by joy, fear, anger, disgust, sadness, shame, etc.—based on what we’ve been telling ourselves and what others have told us.

We need to change this self-talk to one based on what God says.
Change your mind. Change your life.

God cares for you and puts your tears in His bottle. (Psalm 56:8)
We are never alone, and we are never out of His sight or thoughts, even when we are wandering and weeping.

  • Romans 8:31–35, 37–39

  • Isaiah 43:1–4, 25

  • Matthew 10:29–31

  • 1 Peter 1:3–5

To whose word will you or do you yield?

You are beloved of God! Believe it.
Remind yourself daily.
Set this truth as a daily reminder.

Let truth give you the confidence and knowledge to walk out into this crazy world and do the good works that God planned beforehand for you.

Allow God to wash you in His Word until it changes your mind and the way you think and live.
Your self-talk should match God’s talk.

CH 6 – Walking and Working in the World

Holy in truth
We are in the world but not of the world. (John 17:15–21)
Walking and working as holy and set apart for God—holy among the unholy.

What does it mean to be holy?
To be holy means God’s truth has authority over your thoughts, values, attitudes, and behaviors.
No longer are you futile (devoid of truth) in your thinking. (1 Peter 1:18–19)

We cannot walk holy if we do not know the truth and if we do not speak truth for ourselves.
It means we think…
