Speaking the Truth in Agape Love

“…..speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:15

Speaking the truth in love is to share our thoughts and feelings in a way that is kind and compassionate. We do need to love others and maintain our integrity at the same time by honestly sharing truth. If our goal is to clear the air or selfishly get things off our chest, we most likely have not spoken in love. In these instances it is exceedingly easy to harm or belittle; for our goal should be that what we share benefits the other person in terms of growing and developing them toward maturity.

This love we do not have on our own. God is the source of agape love. I John 4:8 states, “God is love (agapos).” God’s agape love is the highest form of love. His love is unconcerned for the self and is concerned for the greatest good of the other. Agape love embodies selflessness, sacrifice, and unconditional care for others. Some writers believe agape love is a choice; this writer, however, believes this love can be appropriated by asking the Holy Spirit to fill us with God’s love for the other. (Romans 5:5 “…..God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Of extreme importance is the fact that we need to listen to the other person’s feelings and perspective with an open heart and mind. It is entirely possible while doing so we may find it easier to extend them more grace and mercy. This does not mean we should abandon our cause yet, in some way, perhaps, be able to deliver the message with more love than we thought conceivable.

💬 If this reflection spoke to you, take a moment today to ask the Holy Spirit to fill your heart with God’s love—especially for those difficult conversations. True growth begins when we speak truth with grace. Share your thoughts or a moment when you experienced agape love in action—we’d love to hear from you in the comments.
